Still life art focuses on inanimate objects such as fruit, flowers, and everyday items, both natural and man-made. These can be arranged simply or in more complex compositions. The genre dates back to ancient Egypt and Rome but became especially popular in the 17th-century Netherlands, where it was known as “stilleven.”

Still life artworks act as time capsules, revealing social, cultural, and economic aspects of their time. Artists use light and shadow to create depth and atmosphere, while texture and reflections add realism and detail.

On the table there are 7 pears, various colours, yellow, orange, brown, green, some on their side and some on their bases standing upright.

Fruit is a popular subject due to its availability, variety, and symbolism, representing abundance, life, and time. An effective composition typically includes three to five fruits, using shape, colour, and texture to create balance, visual interest, and effective use of negative space. Which fruit or fruits will you decide to use, your favourite or heading into an adventure and trying something new? One thing is guaranteed: these can be eaten once you have finished drawing them!

Art Inspiration for this week;

🎨 Observation and focus. Choose one fruit, draw only what you see. Repeat this throughout your paper; you may notice different details each time.

🎨 Texture exploration. Focus on how fruit surfaces look and feel. Draw or paint close-ups of skin textures (smooth, rough, shiny, hairy).

🎨 Mixed media fruit art. Combine drawing, collage, and paint. Use paper and fabric to mimic fruit textures.

🎨 Dutch-inspired painting. Use dark paper or backgrounds, then add highlights with light paint on the fruits to give them depth and shape.

🎨 Composition. Set up a simple fruit arrangement of 3-5 fruits of your choice, with a light source. Focus on light, shadow, and texture.

🎨 Get creative. Make your fruit extra big on your paper. Change the colour of your fruit. Add a background colour to make your fruit ‘pop’.

It will be a great evening of creativity! See you all soon 🙂 Wednesday evening, 7:30 pm UK time. Please join us on link-tree select All4Art https://linktr.ee/all4inclusion
