In South America, the ancestral home of the cacao tree, beans thrive in the hot, humid tropical regions of the Amazon rainforest. Today, sustainable cacao plantations flourish directly under the forest canopy, where beans are harvested, shipped, and processed into delicious chocolate. Our artists have beautifully captured this impressive story! Indulge yourself with our artworks, take a look for yourself.

Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. A watercolor painting in an ancient Mayan codex art style, depicting a Mayan figure seated on an ornate red and gold throne. The profile figure wears a colorful headdress, earrings, and a beaded necklace while holding a bowl of frothy, brown cacao beverage to their lips. Two traditional Mayan hieroglyphic symbols float above the scene on a plain white background.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Barbara

Barbara - Fantastic painting of a traditional cacao drinking ceremony featuring Mayans and their hieroglyphs, this is truly awesome, B!

I love how you have gone back to the ancient Mayan roots of where the humble cacao bean first began. And, how they discovered that by grinding the beans and drinking the liquid, sweetened, spiced, and frothed, it was just as delicious as a modern hot chocolate. This piece really tells a story!

You mentioned the hieroglyphs, which inspired me to research them a little more. Apparently, they weren't just used as drawings; they also expressed deep emotions and movements since there was no written text. Fascinating! A step back in time revisiting ancient history with Barbara's watercolour painting.

Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. An abstract acrylic painting on a white background. The central element is a large, solid rectangular block of textured brown paint. Above and below this block are various vibrant, distinct streaks and dabs of color, including bright pink, yellow, deep blue, turquoise, green, and black paint strokes.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Noor #1
Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. An abstract acrylic painting on white paper background. Textured block of rich brown paint at the centre. Below the brown block, the word "chocolate" is loosely hand-painted in shades of pink, 'dairy milk' painted above.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Noor #2

Noor - Fabulous Noor, looking at your first painting, I love the texture of your chocolate bar and the colourful sweets you have drawn, so many to choose from, all scattered around, this is great. For your second painting, wow, I cannot believe the size of the Cadbury Dairy Milk chunk of chocolate you painted, it looks truly delicious and tempting... Acrylic paints were used for both.

Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. An AI-generated photo compilation set against a bright rainbow gradient background. The text "Cacao chocolate ai art" is written at the top, and "By Phil" is centered in the middle. The graphic features eight framed photos depicting a group of men visiting a chocolate factory or workshop filled with brick walls and large copper vats. In several comical images, men are shown humorously cradling bloated bellies, tasting chocolates, or holding a black-and-white cat, with one man consistently wearing a bright yellow jacket and colorful tie-dye clothing.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Phil

Phil - This is awesome, and funny. An imaginative photo montage using Google Gemini and great prompts imagined by Phil. Amusing to see you enjoyed indulging in all the chocolate to the point of bursting, and so cute to see you and Haley the cat visiting the chocolate shop for yet more chocolate! I hope you feel OK now after your Cacao extravaganza! Google Gemini and imagination were used to create this work.

Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. A felt-tip pen drawing on a white sketchpad illustrating a numbered step-by-step chocolate-making process. Step 1 features a green cacao tree with red pods titled "How choclate is born." Step 2 shows a sliced pod revealing beans alongside a knife, titled "Harvest the beans." Step 3 is a box of brown beans titled "Fermenting the Beans." Step 4 depicts beans on a grid titled "Drying the beans." The process concludes with a large, cross-hatched dark brown "Choclate bar" illustration and a pink wrapper labeled "Donna's Choclate bar."

On the left is a bottle of Yazoo chocolate milkshake with a bright blue cap, blue vertical lettering, and brown cow-print patches. On the right is a tall, filled milkshake glass with a brown beverage, dark wavy details, and a striped brown-and-white straw.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Donna #2

Donna - Amazing! I love both of your artworks this week. Your first piece is so easy to understand. You've included the entire journey, from growing cacao pods all the way to the finished chocolate bar. I would honestly love to try your chocolate brand, I can imagine it's absolutely delicious! Displaying the information as a storyboard was a really fantastic idea.

You're second artwork was awesome, the chocolate milk with both the bottle and the glass. I hope you enjoyed your drink, and maybe it even made you think about how those beans traveled all the way from the rainforest straight into your glass... Felt-tip pens were used for both.

Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. A black biro pen sketch across two pages of an open-lined notebook. On the left page are drawings of a Bounty bar & a Snickers Bar viewed from the top, and a detailed bowl, labelled 'Banana Split'. The right page features a portrait sketch of the character labelled 'Willy Wonka' wearing a top hat. Underneath is the text 'All thanks to' and a tree drawing, representing a Cacao with pods.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Vicky

Vicky - Brilliant! We were so lucky to have Vicky back in our art group this week—she has just stepped off the tarmac from her travels!! Welcome back to the UK after your holiday, Vicky!

What a fab piece of artwork! Vicky explained that she drew a Bounty and a Snickers, which are both her favourites, though she thinks the Bounty just takes the edge. Underneath those, she drew a delicious banana split: a banana sliced in half, scoops of ice cream, and lashings of chocolate sauce. She thoroughly enjoyed eating these while on holiday—a great way to keep cool!

Following the chocolate theme, she also sketched Willy Wonka from the famous film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, capturing his impressive hat and crazy hair perfectly. Finally, at the bottom, she sketched a cacao tree with cacao pods, writing "All thanks to"—which succinctly links all of her wonderful drawings together! Awesome job, Vicky! Black biro was used.

Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. A watercolor and soft pastel artwork depicting a stylized Milka chocolate bar wrapper. The central rectangular wrapper is split vertically by a wavy line, with the left side painted in shades of translucent purple watercolor and the right side in a soft pink wash. The word "Milka" is written vertically on the purple side in white negative space. The entire chocolate bar is surrounded by a hazy background of textured, light green soft pastel.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Andy

Andy - This is such a dreamy artwork, I just love the colours in this piece, Andy! You've captured a great likeness of the brand. If I remember correctly, Milka was originally a Swiss chocolate! Your lettering is spot on, and it's a really nice use of negative space. The textured green pastel background also works brilliantly, it really makes the chocolate bar pop right off the page. It makes me wonder... is this Andy's favourite bar of chocolate or if you bought some back from you recent holiday? A combination of watercolour paints and soft pastels were used.

Rainforest background, green lushness, a red parrot top right corner with cacao pods. Artwork is centre. A watercolor painting depicting a lush tropical rainforest ecosystem. On the right side, textured light-brown tree trunks feature vibrant red and orange cacao pods hanging from the branches and growing directly from the bark. Delicate, star-shaped white and pink blossoms with dark centers also emerge directly from the main central trunk amidst a canopy of green and yellow leaves. In the bottom-left corner, a small, golden-yellow jaguar cub covered in black spots stands on the textured, dark forest floor, looking out toward the centre of the rainforest.
Chocolate. The Cacao Chronicles by Sarah

Sarah - My finished painting for 'Chocolate, the cacao challenge', is called 'Under the Cacao Canopy', and it shows a thriving, sustainable Amazon ecosystem where nature and history live in perfect harmony. At the centre, you can see how the Theobroma cacao pods and delicate blossoms grow directly out of the main tree trunks, surrounded by a lush rainforest understory. I also tucked a little jaguar cub into the corner looking out, a reminder that shade-grown agroforestry keeps pristine rainforest habitats alive for native wildlife. My main aim was to tell a story of conservation alongside the cacao narrative. Watercolours and a touch of acrylic paint were used for this artwork.

The humble bean, as you have seen, goes through much to produce the chocolate we know today; a staggering amount of history surrounds it. Hope you enjoyed our gallery, drop a comment, share your favourite chocolate bar. Everyone has their favourites...
