It has been an incredible two weeks where our artists have been really busy focusing on completing their portraits under the guided instructions of Barbara, who has patiently taught all of us with her fantastic illustrations and knowledge of how to draw self-portraits during our online sessions.
Following on from this, last week, we came together to delve deeper into the positives in our lives. There, we found out more about how others find gratitude and seek happiness.
Take time to appreciate the details in the artwork and look at the fantastic array in our gallery. Enjoy.

Mandy followed both sessions and produced a phenomenal self-portrait. Also, asking some brilliant questions throughout both. 'It was difficult to grasp at times. There's a lot to think about when you look at recreating your face in a drawing, and more complex than you think.' This is excellent! During our topic last week, Mandy explained that her drawing was the book she's currently reading, something that is really good for her mental health, especially if it's the right book for that moment. This is an amazingly detailed likeness of the book, with added creativity making the picture her own. Love the style. A graphite pencil was used in both.

Donna - A lovely portrait of Donna, who spent time with her mum, Val, helping her follow the instructional video to draw her self-portrait over the two sessions with Barbara's expertise. Great listening, and your hair looks fabulous. Brilliant work, Donna. Graphite was only used.

Parveen - A beautiful portrait drawing capturing the shadows and more shading. Parveen, with her art knowledge, took her sketch to a new level, which we didn't cover in our tutorial, and this is the result. Her portrait has added character and depth. Graphite was only used.

Sarah - I would expressly like to thank Barbara Hulme for taking the time to prepare and teach us how to produce a self-portrait over 2 sessions with instructional videos. The whole process has been incredibly enlightening, and each of us gained a great deal; many found aspects tricky, and we looked at ourselves in new ways. The person I drew resembles a likeness of myself; however, as you so elaborated, practice is our best teacher, and over time, improvements will be noticed. Graphite was only used.

Noor and her young family member - joined Part 2 of the instructional tutorial and chose to draw their portraits or characters in their own style. These look great, and they decided to use some colour too. Noor's favourite colour is purple, so she added a purple hairband. Loving the design of their character, they looked like they were based on anime-style characters.

Noor - I love how colourful the leaves of this awesome Gratitude Tree that Noor drew for the topic this week. Look carefully, and you will notice that they have hand-written words or messages of gratitude on them. Each leaf has a word that means something, personally, to her in her life journey to help keep her positive. Incredibly poignant with the strong roots providing strength. Coloured pencils were used for this artwork.

Noor - Another fantastic drawing!! This is awesome, I love this, Noor's fish. For her second drawing, Noor carefully followed a tutorial while we were on the Zoom session, on a new app called 'Simple Drawings'. It looks like we are viewing the fish from underneath as it releases bubbles while swimming over us. What an angle, very impressive! Noor really enjoys art and practices her drawing a lot; this is something that adds to the positives in her life. Graphite was only used in this drawing.

Helen - 'Positivity Blooms'
An incredibly beautiful painting. Helen's use of watercolours has added some very delicate tones and subtle shades to her artwork. And your fantastic idea of the Japanese style of Kintsugi pottery, where broken things can be rebuilt and made beautiful once more, together with new growth with the sunflower, is exceptionally creative. Your imagination and inspiration have shone through with this topic. Thank you for sharing this with us this week in your artwork, Helen. Watercolour paints and watercolour pencils were used for this artwork.

Barbara - This is a serenely stunning self-portrait. It's great to see Barbara so relaxed and happy after all the difficult times that have challenged you over the recent months, and this portrait defies negativity. Proving your positive thoughts and practices, and being lost in an activity you love, painting has truly got you through these chapters.
Beautiful calming colours. The spider plant with its babies in the picture adds an extra element of positivity, bringing nature. It's also an important oxygen-releasing plant that can help enrich life. Watercolours were used for this artwork.

Matthew - Decided on sketching some trees as he enjoys being out in nature. Biro's were used for this artwork.
Everyone worked incredibly hard, drawing and sketching, trying something new and coming out of their comfort zones over the past two weeks. It has been brilliant. Thank you so much to Barbara and everyone for taking part during our tutorial sessions, but also for joining each work and contributing all your artwork each week and sharing ideas and expanding our knowledge each meeting. You all make the group what it is and a great Art space 🫶🏻
If you have any favourite artworks, let us know, drop a comment, it would be great to hear from you.
Or, if you would like to join us for our next art session, there will be a different topic each week. We run on Wednesdays, 7:30 pm, see our link tree, All4Art.
Looking forward to seeing you there if you're free.
