It has been an incredible two weeks where our artists have been really busy focusing on completing their portraits under the guided instructions of Barbara, who has patiently taught all of us with her fantastic illustrations and knowledge of how to draw self-portraits during our online sessions.

Following on from this, last week, we came together to delve deeper into the positives in our lives. There, we found out more about how others find gratitude and seek happiness.

Take time to appreciate the details in the artwork and look at the fantastic array in our gallery. Enjoy.

Light peach coloured background mainly; image placed centrally. Light coloured paper, graphite drawing, a portrait of a woman, short bobbed hair, to just above jaw line, with fringe, front facing.
Mandy completed her portrait, following the All4inclusion tutorial session led by Barbara
Bright green and blue background with image central. A graphite drawing of a book, front cover shows a male's head on a plinth with a beard, hair to the sides of his face, little on the top. A rose between his teeth.
Mandy's 'Positive's in Life*MH' artwork

Mandy followed both sessions and produced a phenomenal self-portrait. Also, asking some brilliant questions throughout both. 'It was difficult to grasp at times. There's a lot to think about when you look at recreating your face in a drawing, and more complex than you think.' This is excellent! During our topic last week, Mandy explained that her drawing was the book she's currently reading, something that is really good for her mental health, especially if it's the right book for that moment. This is an amazingly detailed likeness of the book, with added creativity making the picture her own. Love the style. A graphite pencil was used in both.

Light peach coloured background mainly; image placed centrally. Light coloured paper, graphite drawing of a woman, longer hair to shoulder height, front facing.
Donna completed her portrait, following the All4inclusion tutorial session led by Barbara

Donna - A lovely portrait of Donna, who spent time with her mum, Val, helping her follow the instructional video to draw her self-portrait over the two sessions with Barbara's expertise. Great listening, and your hair looks fabulous. Brilliant work, Donna. Graphite was only used.

Light peach coloured background mainly; image placed centrally. Light coloured paper, graphite drawing of a woman, hair brushing cheeks and a side parting, front facing.
Parveen completed her portrait, following the All4inclusion tutorial session led by Barbara

Parveen - A beautiful portrait drawing capturing the shadows and more shading. Parveen, with her art knowledge, took her sketch to a new level, which we didn't cover in our tutorial, and this is the result. Her portrait has added character and depth. Graphite was only used.

Light peach coloured background mainly; image placed centrally. Light coloured paper, graphite drawing of a woman, hair tied up , strands brushing forehead and cheeks and a side parting, front facing.
Sarah completed her portrait, following the All4inclusion tutorial session led by Barbara

Sarah - I would expressly like to thank Barbara Hulme for taking the time to prepare and teach us how to produce a self-portrait over 2 sessions with instructional videos. The whole process has been incredibly enlightening, and each of us gained a great deal; many found aspects tricky, and we looked at ourselves in new ways. The person I drew resembles a likeness of myself; however, as you so elaborated, practice is our best teacher, and over time, improvements will be noticed. Graphite was only used.

Light peach coloured background mainly; full body character image placed centrally. Light coloured paper, long hair coloured brown and purple hairband. Front facing.
Noor joined the second of our portrait, All4inclusion tutorial sessions led by Barbara
Light peach coloured background mainly; cartoon character image placed centrally. Light coloured paper, long dark brown hair, tied in 2 pig tails to each side of the head. Pink lips. large dark eye shadow. Red top with a large blue heart design. Large blue shoes. Front facing.
A young member of Noor's family joined the second of our portrait, All4inclusion tutorial sessions led by Barbara

Noor and her young family member - joined Part 2 of the instructional tutorial and chose to draw their portraits or characters in their own style. These look great, and they decided to use some colour too. Noor's favourite colour is purple, so she added a purple hairband. Loving the design of their character, they looked like they were based on anime-style characters.

Bright green and blue background with image central. A white paper with a brown tree trunk, a few black roots at base flaring out. Top of tree are branches with large leaves pink, blue and purple with words of gratitude written on them.
Noor's 'Positive's in Life*MH' artwork

Noor - I love how colourful the leaves of this awesome Gratitude Tree that Noor drew for the topic this week. Look carefully, and you will notice that they have hand-written words or messages of gratitude on them. Each leaf has a word that means something, personally, to her in her life journey to help keep her positive. Incredibly poignant with the strong roots providing strength. Coloured pencils were used for this artwork.

Bright green and blue background with image central. A white paper with a graphite sketch of a fish, large gills and mouth an eye and bubbles escaping. Angle is from the underside. Sketch is on to the bottom left of the light paper.
Noor's second 'Positive's in Life*MH' artwork

Noor - Another fantastic drawing!! This is awesome, I love this, Noor's fish. For her second drawing, Noor carefully followed a tutorial while we were on the Zoom session, on a new app called 'Simple Drawings'. It looks like we are viewing the fish from underneath as it releases bubbles while swimming over us. What an angle, very impressive! Noor really enjoys art and practices her drawing a lot; this is something that adds to the positives in her life. Graphite was only used in this drawing.

Bright green and blue background with image central. A brilliant yellow sunflower with dark brown centre and green leaves, grows from a blue cracked bowl fixed with gold glue, is on a light yellow, blown and green background. The pot is sat on a mid brown surface
Helen's 'Positive's in Life*MH' artwork

Helen - 'Positivity Blooms'

An incredibly beautiful painting. Helen's use of watercolours has added some very delicate tones and subtle shades to her artwork. And your fantastic idea of the Japanese style of Kintsugi pottery, where broken things can be rebuilt and made beautiful once more, together with new growth with the sunflower, is exceptionally creative. Your imagination and inspiration have shone through with this topic. Thank you for sharing this with us this week in your artwork, Helen. Watercolour paints and watercolour pencils were used for this artwork.

Bright green and blue background with image central. White woman, red hair, feather cut, shoulder length. Green top, black trousers. Sat on a red sofa, leaning on a teal cushion. Leaning on a patchwork cushion, has a sketchbook. Painting a picture with a paintbrush while holding a pad. Green spider plant in background.
Barbara's 'Positive's in Life*MH' artwork

Barbara - This is a serenely stunning self-portrait. It's great to see Barbara so relaxed and happy after all the difficult times that have challenged you over the recent months, and this portrait defies negativity. Proving your positive thoughts and practices, and being lost in an activity you love, painting has truly got you through these chapters.

Beautiful calming colours. The spider plant with its babies in the picture adds an extra element of positivity, bringing nature. It's also an important oxygen-releasing plant that can help enrich life. Watercolours were used for this artwork.

Bright green and blue background with image central. White paper with blue lines with image drawn on in blue & green biro of 2 tear drop shapes with scribble pattern colouring towards base. Hand holding paper to the bottom right
Matthew's 'Positive's in Life*MH' artwork

Matthew - Decided on sketching some trees as he enjoys being out in nature. Biro's were used for this artwork.

Everyone worked incredibly hard, drawing and sketching, trying something new and coming out of their comfort zones over the past two weeks. It has been brilliant. Thank you so much to Barbara and everyone for taking part during our tutorial sessions, but also for joining each work and contributing all your artwork each week and sharing ideas and expanding our knowledge each meeting. You all make the group what it is and a great Art space 🫶🏻

If you have any favourite artworks, let us know, drop a comment, it would be great to hear from you.
