On Display: š After Darkšāā¬
There's something rather magical about the world after sunset, when familiar places take on a different appearance, and our imaginations begin to wander!
For some, it's a time of mystery and excitement, perhaps with a little Halloween mischief thrown in. For others, it's a peaceful moment to pause and reflect, when daylight fades, and the sounds of the world take on a different character.
Our creatives explored After DarkĀ in their own individual ways, and as we discovered, there's often more to a picture than first meets the eye.
So, what stories are waiting to unfold? Come and take a peek at our gallery. You might just be surprised by what you discover! š

Andy - Created a lovely nighttime cityscape using soft pastels on black paper, which makes a perfect backdrop for his scene. The buildings are outlined against the darkness, with warm yellow light glowing from their windows. Above the rooftops, bright blue stars twinkle around a beautiful silver crescent moon. šš
I love how the colours stand out against the black paper, and I can't help wondering who's still awake behind all those lit-up windows! Media: Soft Pastels

Matthew ā Drew a lovely big, almost full moon for After Dark, using his All4Inclusion pen. š He's really looking forward to Halloween and his trip to Blackpool soon, so perhaps he'll get to see the moon shining brightly while he's away. Let's hope the clouds stay out of the way! āØļø Media: Black ink.

Noor - Brought a splash of colour to our After Dark theme with her acrylic painting of a mysterious, perhaps haunted house by the sea. The bright red and blue house stands beneath a black night sky, with green seaweed-covered rocks and blue water along the shore. I love how she's used bold blocks of colour to bring her seaside scene to life! šØš

Vicky - Filled two pages of her sketchbook with a lovely collection of ideas inspired by After Dark. From the iconic Ghostbusters logo and Halloween trick-or-treaters to a glowing candle, there's plenty of fun alongside the more peaceful side of night-time. Her wide-eyed owl has some impressive talons, while a nightjar, a bird she's still hoping to see, and a little hedgehog bring in the nocturnal wildlife. Vicky also included her own night-time cycling adventures, complete with bike lights, before finishing with a well-earned sleep after a busy day! š“š

Donna
Night Sky Adventures #1
Donna's imagination took her into outer space for our After Dark theme! Using felt tips, she created a colourful nighttime adventure, complete with a rocket heading towards a bright orange moon, a ringed planet and some wonderfully jet-black bats! I particularly love how Donna found inspiration in her own dressing gown, using the stars on the fabric as a template for those lovely yellow stars in her drawing. Who knew a dressing gown could come in so handy for a journey into space? šāØļø
Spooky Castle #2
Donna took inspiration from a YouTube tutorial shared with the group and created a wonderfully spooky castle, using the outline of her mum Val's hand! With felt tips, she added glowing yellow windows, a witch flying across the moonlit sky, friendly ghosts and pumpkins scattered around the castle. I especially love how the fingers became tall, pointed towers. A clever and fun way to bring the After Dark theme to life! šš»

Phil - Has been having fun with Gemini and InShot again, taking himself and his cat Haley on all sorts of After Dark adventures! From sharing a Lady and the TrampĀ inspired meal to singing together and enjoying a night out, these two have certainly been busy! š My favourite has to be Phil strolling beneath the streetlights with Haley cuddled up in his arms. Just adorable! šš

Simon ā Joined us for the first time during our After Dark theme, drawing a wonderfully quirky collection of spooky characters with colourful felt tips. š From the top-hatted skeleton having a smoke to the witch on her broomstick, bats and creepy crawlies, there's plenty going on! And that pumpkin-headed scarecrow in his smart suit still makes me smile. I'm not sure whether to be scared or curious! š
It was lovely having Simon join us, and I hope we'll see more of his creativity soon! āØļø

Christine
Haunted House #1
Christine's haunted house has a wonderfully spooky feel, with its gorgeous purple night sky, huge moon and warm golden light glowing from the windows! ššļø I love the twisted trees and those long steps winding up to the mysterious front door. It almost looks welcoming, but would you dare knock? š»
There's so much lovely detail to take in, and it must have taken quite a bit of concentration to complete on her colouring app. It looks fantastic, Christine! š

Spooky Pumpkin #2
Christine also shared this super spooky pumpkin, created using her Repaint colouring app! š With its glowing yellow eyes, wicked grin and bright orange face, it really stands out against the deep blue woodland background. I wouldn't fancy bumping into this character after dark! š»š

Kereena - Filled her page with lots of little sketches and thoughts about After Dark, from Halloween and trick-or-treating to the changing seasons and the tasty pumpkin soup Simon made! š I love her idea of a light party as an alternative to Halloween, with games, stories and crafts.
I was particularly struck by her words, āI choose light over darkness & evil.ā Such a powerful message, especially alongside her thoughts about being kind, honest and loving towards others. A lovely reminder of how important kindness is. šāØ

Barbara ā Inspiration, in her own words:
āAfter Dark ā An Iranian refugee in Canada, supporting protesters in Iran.
This is a still from 34 seconds of footage where a woman defies a series of the theocracyās laws and norms in a riveting act of autonomy. She wears no hijab, three years after the āWomen, Life, Freedomā protests against the regimeās required headscarves.
She burns an image of Iranās supreme leader, a crime in the Islamic Republic punishable by death. Her curly hair cascades ā yet another transgression in the Iranian governmentās eyes. She lights a cigarette from the flame ā a gesture considered immodest in Iran.
And in those few seconds, circulated and amplified a million times over, she steps into history.ā
Barbara has captured this extraordinary moment beautifully using watercolour and a white Posca pen. I love the detail in the woman's face and hands, her flowing dark hair and red nails, and the warm glow of the flame against the darkness.
It's a powerful and thought-provoking interpretation of our After Dark theme, reminding us that darkness can represent far more than the absence of light.
Here's hoping for a future of peace and freedom. ā¤ļø

Sarah āĀ At this time of year, I was looking forward to watching the Orionid meteor shower, but unfortunately the skies were cloudy, and I missed the opportunity for another year. So, I decided to create a meteor shower of my own!
There's something quite reflective about looking up at the stars. For me, it brings back memories of people I've loved and lost, and that childhood excitement of spotting a shooting star and making a wish.
It's something we're taught when we're young, yet somehow the magic stays with us. No matter how old we get, there's still that little moment of wonder when a star appears to fall across the sky. š š

Beyond the Artwork⦠šāØ
What a fascinating collection of artwork and ideas our creatives have brought together for After Dark! There's been humour, mystery, imagination and some deeply thoughtful interpretations, reminding us that the same theme can mean something very different to each of us.
Some pieces have made me smile, while others have encouraged me to pause and consider things from another perspective. I think that's one of the things I enjoy most about our galleries: discovering the stories, experiences and thoughts that find their way into everyone's creativity.
I personally enjoy the darkness. It gives me the space and time to decompress after a day of dealing with what often feels like one pressing situation after another. It's a chance to take a breather, gather my thoughts and file things away where they need to be.
With less traffic and fewer distractions, I can truly listen to the sounds around me. Those tiny scurries and taps outside make me wonder what little creatures might be going about their nightly business!
I find comfort in the darkness. It wraps around me like a blanket, offering a sense of peace until it gradually lifts as dawn breaks.
It's often during those quiet early hours, when much of the world is asleep, that my paintbrushes become busy! With the noise of the day behind me, I can splash paint across paper or canvas, lose myself in my imagination and simply enjoy creating.
Perhaps some of you find your creativity comes alive when the rest of the world grows quiet, too? šš
