During this art session, we had a great discussion about drawing horses! We found them very difficult, but with perseverance and a lot of rubbing out, we managed to create some great art! This week captured not only fire horses, but also other areas relating to the celebrations and also the buildings of China. Spend time looking at the gallery.

Oriental design background, picture centrally placed. Blue background with an orange and red flame pattern horse, flame mane and tail. Fireworks exploding in the sky and orange/red hanging lanterns with yellow tassels, some yellow stars.
Chinese Fire Horse - New Year by Helen

Helen - Beautiful fiery horse, such a great capture of the movement, love all the swirls/symbols and the flaming mane as well as the background that captures the essence of the Chinese New Year with fireworks and lanterns. Helen shared, 'I got Gemini to split the picture into a grid. So I could draw the horse. It's really helped with my drawing.' Created with pastels.

Chinese Fire Horse - New Year by Andy Drawing 1

Andy - For his first drawing, Andy chose a new idea following a tutorial and drawing Chinese Pagodas. This was during the art group session, so time was limited, and some tutorials are hard to follow, so they need to be watched and rewound. It's a great first attempt at a Pagoda, especially as he'd not viewed them up close. Pastels were used.

Chinese Fire Horse - New Year by Andy Drawing 2

Andy - decided he would like to draw another artwork connected to Chinese buildings, and he captured this, a stunning sunset collage and a sailing boat on a Chinese River. This is a fantastic composition, with a beautiful blending of the colours of the sunset with the buildings lining the sky. A single sailboat sits in the calm water. Pastels and coloured paper were used for this artwork.

Above their heads is a red and yellow lantern
Chinese Fire Horse - New Year by Barbara

Barbara - 'Year of the Fire Horse'. A superb drawing/painting of a beautifully majestic fire horse. The colour is striking, as is the backdrop. They look like they have been mesmerised by the Chinese warrior who's feeding them sugar lumps! Barbara explains more about her artwork, 'in the background is a traditional Chinese lamp and a waterfall over rocks. Water is supposed to help calm the fire and wildness of the fire horse. The green foreground represents wood which helps feed the fire, and the red lantern is also symbolic. Bringing all into harmony and balance.'

A great deal of meaning and symbolism is behind this painting. Watercolour was used to create this work.

Chinese Fire Horse - New Year by Sarah

Sarah - 'Chinese Fire-Horse' Imagine a beautiful, elegant bay filly horse, she has spirit and is quick on her hooves with determination. Her mane flows in all directions, snatching with the breeze, tangling like flames. This is the year of the Fire-Horse. I added a pink wash to resemble cherry heady cherry blossom scent and some green shoots for woody bamboo stems. Watercolour coloured pencils and watercolour paint were used to create this artwork.

This week, we all found the topic really interesting; however, we all had our own challenges. During the art session, both Barbara and I had issues around capturing horse likenesses and found stumbling blocks in positions and proportions. There were several attempts made before colour was added in our own time!

A great deal of imagination came to light during this topic. Enjoy the vast array of artwork and the brief insight into how they have been created. Everyone enjoyed investigating the topic and came up with their own unique take and creation.
