We had a great evening exploring scarecrows! One of our group members had tech issues, but still managed to send us some fantastic work! There were some very different interpretations, as you'd expect. This adds to the enjoyment for everyone, as you never know what you will see once all the artwork comes in to look at for each theme.

Light terracotta background. Top right; collage of photos showing a man dressed as a scarecrow in different settings. Bottom left black and white scarecrow sketch with a moon looking down with some scraggly vegetation surrounding it and a moon looking down, some black birds in the sky.
Completed artwork for the Scarecrow theme by Carolina and Phil

Phil - created digital art on the Toon me app he uses. Lots of creative fun using the scarecrow theme. The colours are lovely and bright.

Carolina - a very imaginative Scarecrow sketch. I looked at this multiple times and kept noticing different details on each occasion. If you look especially closely in the bottom left there's a pair of dancing scarecrows. Carolina used oil pastel and ink to create this beautiful piece.

Light terracotta background. Top right; black and white sketch of a crow on a branch wearing a tatty, light tan coloured straw hat with a tan coloured waistcoat sat on a branch, full moon in the sky; Bottom left; Black faced scarecrow wearing a dirty cream ripped shroud covering head and shoulders. Scarecrow has tattered body and face with rips, stitches and cuts. Mouth is stitched closed. Eyes are red, fixed stare.
Completed artwork for the Scarecrow theme by Barbara and Sarah

Sarah - 'Scare Crow' - scaring crows, this is my interpretation of the topic this week. It's quirky, my crow is a countryside keeper. Every animal has their role and is vital in the greater scheme of things. My 'Scare Crow' is rather senior, wearing a waistcoat and hat, keeps a watchful eye, ready to take care of business as necessary. Extremely intelligent with imagination ready to solve problems, they are also highly social and are vital for our ecosystems.

Charcoal and coloured pencils were used.

Barbara - this was her very scary-looking scarecrow that represented her fear of the unknown whilst waiting for test results last session. Understandably, fears and worries of the unknown are heightened during troubled times. Being able to convey them in such a way, through art, gives them power. Conveying them visually is helpful when words are hard to find. Watercolour paints and a fine liner were used.

As you can see, scarecrows evoke different images in different people, depending on what they are experiencing at the time, maybe. There are some truly stunning pieces of artwork here with some interesting backstories. Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting, to those who tried to join, and to all who worked on their sketches and art. It is very much appreciated, and I hope you got as much out of the session as I did.

Our sessions are chill, but we will, of course, talk about topics as they come up in people's lives and spill out into people's art.

Let me know your thoughts on the gallery this week.

Please feel free to join our next session, Wednesday evening, 7:30-9pm, using Linktree. See you then.
