Following on from my blog on European City Breaks with trams, I got the recommendation to spotlight Innsbruck and Salzburg (Ironically a few weeks afterwards I ended up on a last-minute holiday to there- although the Salzburg and Lake Wolfgang was on a visit in 2013). Both of these cities are connected from the UK with a range of flights although many routes only operate once a week, and offer a range of nearby holiday destinations and day trips to enjoy the best that Austria has to offer. It is also possible to access this region by train from Munich, who's international airport offers a range of flights.
Innsbruck
Innsbruck is the state capital for Tyrol and has many accessible sights and attractions for you to enjoy. I spent a day there and saw the various sights such as the Golden Roof and the city tower. There is lots to see and do here we didn't get time to do, such as the cable car to the Alpine Zoo and also panoramic tram 6 which runs to the nearby mountain village of Igles.

In my visit a few weeks ago I was staying in Kitzbühel. This is a very accessible town in particularly the colourful town centre A particular favorite is the 2 cable cars in the town. Unfortunately we were too early in the Hamankammn one but we still enjoyed the Horn. Shortly outside the town is the Fleckalmbahn Cable Car which we enjoyed.

Nearby is the town of St Johann. This is also home to many restaurants and cafes and attractions such as a cable car into the mountains

Salzburg
The city of Salzburg is famous for the setting of the film The Sound of Music. Unlike Innsbruck the city does not have a tram network but a dense trollybus and local bus system. I visited in 2013 and saw the many sights of the city including the Mirrabell Gardens, Hellbrun Palace, The zoo and a river cruise on the Salzach.

Zell am See
This is a popular town I visited on my recent trip to Austria . It is very accessible and has a beautiful lakefront, cable car and shopping area.

Lake Wolfgang
Back in 2013 I visited this area of Austria staying in St Gilgen. This is a beautiful town located on the lake and has many attractions including the Zwolferhorn Cable Car. On the opposite side of the lake is St Wolfgang, home to the steepest cog railway in Austria up the Shafberg.
