A wonderful week of imagination and creativity was inspired by this theme. From aircraft and flying machines to people who fly them or in them, cloud shapes and stunning cloudscapes, our creatives took the topic and truly made it their own. Take your time to browse our gallery and enjoy the wonderful variety of artwork on display.

Up, Up & Away by Alison

Alison - Such a beautiful butterfly. Alison carefully traced this Swallowtail shape and then coloured it in with their like-for-like colours and markings. She took a lot of time with this one and all the details. This is one of my favourites. Great job, Alison. Coloured pencils were used.

Up, Up Away! by Noor #2

Noor - A very busy week for Noor and two fantastic paintings. She's used such beautiful vibrant colours in her first one. Love your sunset with the plane flying over the sea, Noor said the travellers onboard had been on their holidays. I can imagine they must be tired but happy with lots of memories! Acrylic paints were used.

Up, Up & Away! by Andy #3 taken in Lanzarote

Andy - Was incredibly busy! What a great concept, love this, you may know, Andy leads our All4Inclusion Travel Group, which was his inspiration. Which led Andy to design and draw this All4Travel aeroplane to take everyone on all the tours around the globe showing what each destination has to offer, there's plenty of space for everyone, that's for sure! Great detail with the '4' on the tail fin. Felt-tip pen and watercolours were used.

His second and third pictures are photo collages he made using his own photographs. Andy explained that he liked the colours in the sky and the way the clouds were highlighted against them. Taken in different locations in the world.

Up, Up & Away! by Donna #2

Donna - Fantastic artwork for your first picture, I love all the elements you've captured, awesomely colourful hot air balloons, floating among the high clouds, and a few birds. Great idea, incorporating a cool paraglider! The folks flying their kites by the river look like a really fun element, well done, Donna.

Donna's second artwork is a super cool space hopper, a great smile, and a really vibrant orange. I remember these, bouncing around on them in the 70's, they are still around today! Donna used felt-tip pens for her picture.

A simple black line drawing on white paper showing a large looping shape that resembles a cloud and a balloon with a string in the sky from top to bottom. The abstract design is created with a single continuous line.
Up, Up & Away! by Matthew

Matthew - Really great work by Matthew, he drew a balloon on a very long string flying up high into the clouds. Love this, the balloon looks like it has certainly reached the clouds, love this, Matthew. A very imaginative linework drawing, made using a black biro.

A sky-themed background with a hot air balloon top right, sunshine centre, birds and countryside illustrations, bottom. Artwork displayed centrally, a collage, 7 photographs on a colourful background. Pictures based on 3 men flying in a hot air balloon, a plane and bouncing on toys including space hoppers and pogo sticks. A picture of the men with large bird wings, with parachutes free-falling and one of a man and an older lady jumping from a plane. Comedy faces and scenes.
Up' Up & Away by Phil

Phil - A very comical and well-thought-out photo collage created by Phil. A lot of imaginative ideas, ranging from toys that give you flight to a fantasy concept, with him and others having wings, as well as comedic scenarios in the hot air balloon and the cockpit of a small light aircraft. Interestingly, he has also created an image of himself and his mum jumping in tandem from an aeroplane, not sure she would be game for that! The imagery did make us all laugh, however. Very bright and colourful, thanks, Phil. He used Google Gemini to generate the images.

A sky-themed background with a hot air balloon top right, sunshine centre, birds and countryside illustrations, bottom. Artwork displayed centrally. A painting of 5 balloons floating into the blue sky, purple, blue, green, yellow and red, above a green grassy field. The balloon strings lead to a soft pink-tinted cloud, shaped like a reclining winged person, with a small winged cat sitting nearby. Fantasy artwork capturing the shapes in the clouds.
Up, Up & Away! by Sarah

Sarah - 'Connections in the Clouds'

My artwork is inspired by the shapes discovered in the clouds and the memories and stories they can evoke. Gazing up at the sky, our minds are free to wander, finding familiar faces, figures or moments from our past. The colourful balloons represent happiness, hope and freedom, gently lifting thoughts while their strings keep us connected to the earth. This is a reminder that, even when our imagination drifts far away, we remain grounded by the people, places and memories that shape who we are. You never know what you see when you look up to the skies, cloud shapes change so quickly, and everyone sees something different... A Watercolour painting, imaginative fantasy.

A sky-themed background with a hot air balloon top right, sunshine centre, birds and countryside illustrations, bottom. Artwork displayed centrally. A watercolour painting of hot air balloon with Klimt patterns on it, in yellow, blue, pink green, orange, purple and red. A wicker basket underneath. Floating in a blue sky with, fluffy clouds.
Up, Up & Away by Barbara

Barbara - Was inspired by the artist Klimt and decorated a hot air balloon's fabric with their trademark patterning. Very beautiful, colourful and intricate, wouldn't certainly look up at this hot air balloon in the sky! It would be a lovely contrast against the blue with the white fluffy clouds as Barbara has painted it here. She has used watercolour paints.

What a brilliant week! Everyone really enjoyed this theme and let their imaginations soar. Sometimes, all it takes is looking up at the sky for your mind to wander, encouraging you to think a little deeper, dream a little bigger and explore new ideas. As the saying goes, the sky's the limit… but perhaps this week we reached a little higher.
