Back to the Future

Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads

"It's 2024 and yet we still ..........."

I must say this multiple times a week.

Growing up 2024 was futuristic.

Doc Brown's future was 2015, strapping in to his DeLorean, 88 miles per hour and time travel is possible.

But despite our technological advances we still have pedal bins in NHS hospital toilets. Signs saying we must dispose of our hand towels, but unable to open them due to the edge of the bin.

We still judge people on appearances, whether that is disability, how they dress or skin colour.

We still expect to teach children the same, despite science showing us that not everyone learns the same.

The best person for the job is the person who is best at interviews, not the person who is actually the best at the job.

Women are allowed to vote for the first time on 14th December 1918, but can't compete in every sport at the Olympics until 2012. (And still are paid 9.4% less than Men for doing the same job as per the BBC, figures as per 2022).

I didn't expect discrimination to be open and public in 2024, but it is. But younger generations are starting to care more about this than previous generations, (in my opinion).

Businesses will be ignored for things such as:

  • The Gender Pay Gap and treating women with disrespect

  • Not being environmentally friendly

  • Not supporting disabled employees and customers

  • Not having a strong enough representation of society on their websites

With this, seeing leaders of businesses having an opinion matters.

Ignoring prejudice such as Islamophobia may have been the safe thing to do for your business ten years ago.

Now, people want to know you care.

If you want to say you are inclusive, it's no good choosing who you are inclusive to.

Being inclusive, means being open to the safety of everyone.
