Lanzarote is one of the Spanish Canary Islands located off the coast of Africa. It is a popular year round holiday destination for those from the UK. In February I enjoyed my 5th visit to the island. There is lots to see and do on the island for people of all ages as shared below in the blog along with experience at hotels.

There are many resorts to stay on the island. I personally like staying at Playa De Los Pocillos. This is a family friendly resort a short distance from the airport and part of the larger town of Puerto Del Carman. There is a great bus service to other parts of the island for wider exploration.

Two hotels I have stayed at in this area are the Lanzarote Village and the VIK San Antonio. Both hotels have facilities for guests with disabilities offering adapted rooms and wheelchair access. The San Antonio has mobility scooters avalable for hire at reception. Both also offer a daytime and evening entertainment although the evening one can start a bit late in the evening (around 9.30pm) at Lanzarote Village. Below are some pictures from both hotels.

There are a variety of tours to explore more of the island and many of these can be booked from your hotel reception. On my recent visit I done the Short South Tour. This takes in the famous Timanfya National Park volcanos found on the south of the island and the various experiments on offer. There is also a restaurant where you can book an evening meal barbequed from the heat on the ground. After speaking to the tour company the Short South is one of the most suitable for guests with disabilities.

Two other tours I have done previously is the Cesar Manrique Tour and the Grand Tour. The Manrique Tour covers many sights by the famous artist Cesar Manrique around the island such as the Cactus Garden and Jamos Del Agua- which is a volcanic tube and underground lake now turned into a concert venue. You also spend some time visiting the artists house that he designed himself in volcanic lava bubbles. While both these sites are beautiful and worth a visit. It is worth remembering that these are old buildings and disabled access can be limited due to involving lots of stairs.

The Grand tour takes in sights such as the Green Lake and the La Geria wine regions as well as the Jamos Del Agua and the Timanfya National Park

Away from the organised tours the public buses of Lanzarote offer easy access and travel to other areas of the island.

Arrecife

This is the islands capital. Despite it being the city and more local services, there is still lots for tourists to do. There are several museums to visit, a marina and lots of shops.

Two must visit sites within Arrecife are the Isolete De La Fermina which is an open air swimming pool (not open to the public) and a cafe offering various drinks and snacks. The nearby Grand Hotel which is the tallest building on the island offers a great restaurant/ bar on the 17th floor with panoramic views over the city. The hotel also offers many disabled access rooms and even has a virtual tour on its website to help guests.

Costa Teguise is another resort to the north of Arrecife. It is home to the aquarium and this is well worth a visit. The aquarium is fully disabled accessible and takes arround 1-1.5 hours to go round. It is a relaxing time out in the shade of the sun.

At the south of the island is the resort of Playa Blanca. This is home to a nice seafront promanade and various shops. There are also many ferries avalable for the 40 minute crossing to the island of Fuerteventura and day trips are avalable.

Hope this blog is helpful to plan your next trip and as always if there is anywhere you would like to find out more about at our monthly meet ups please let us know.
